Anyone recommend any alternatives since this extension seems to be abandoned by the developer?

Really ? No Answer within a week ? - I use Sidewise in Opera for several years now via the Chrome Extensions addon, but there are some annoying issues with the new Opera Versions.

+1

I was exploring Chrome's tab groups feature, which is still in its experimental stages, and it's too basic, so I tried to find something better. Of all third-party extensions I've tried in my opinion Sidewise is nicest one. There is also Tabs Outliner, but I find it's very unforgiving as it's very easy to delete tabs and there's no way to get them back, where Sidewise has a built-in history of closed tabs, and many other nice features. I use both for different things, basically.

SideWise seems to work alright but when I wake a tab it creates a duplicate that appears somewhere else in the tree. This is obviously a compatibility problem with later Chrome versions. I wish the developer could look into this.

The Duplication is one problem I encountered, Another one (in Opera) is that a tab's own history after closing and re-opening is lost now (maybe that's what you meant with the history), which is not happening in Tree Style Tab for Firefox.

Additionally, in Opera, all tabs are shown in the tab bar, which maybe an Opera-specific problem. With a few hundred tabs that can get pretty dense (and was not the case earlier, when sidewise was maintained). But I am not so firm with the "deeper" configuration possibilities of that browser.

As a suggestion I can recommend Palemoon (firefox fork) with "tab kit" extension. Nothing comes close to it in terms of tabs functionality (check the screenshot below). Palemoon forked long time ago and I suspect it wont be abandoned any time soon.
